Buoys & Mooring Systems
Mooring Systems

Mooring systems are designed to hold buoys into position in all conditions including cyclonic. They consist of steel chain, swivels, shackles and a mooring weight on the seabed.

The mooring system employed to maintain a floating aid on station is critical to the effectiveness of the aid to navigation.  Mooring design and maintenance are skills that have been developed over many years within AMS’s workforce.

Careful appraisal of site conditions is required to ensure that mooring performance is not reduced by environmental factors.  AMS personnel have significant experience in the assessment of site conditions and in developing mooring configurations that maximise life and station keeping ability.

AMS has access to service providers in key areas, who can assist with site assessment surveys and in monitoring of mooring conditions.

Mooring Buoys/Cyclone Moorings

Mooring Buoys are utilised to facilitate the mooring of small vessels and large ships.

A mooring system usually consists of a mooring buoy (to float the chain), a mooring anchor and a length of chain (running between the anchor and the mooring buoy). Mooring Buoys are typically strong, lightweight buoys capable of supporting substantial loads.

Suitable for most harbour and coastal locations.

Special Marker Buoys

Special Marker Buoys are utilised for marking specific areas such as ski areas, dive sites, marine farms and underwater objects. Special Marker Buoys are generally fabricated from polyethylene.

AMS can design these buoys to suit client requirements and specific needs.

Chain Buoys

A chain buoy consists of a floatation hull, navigation light or mark and generally a tail tube and counterweight for operational stability.  Chain buoys are designed to enable handling and servicing from small craft in reasonably protected waters.

Common types of Chain Buoys are fabricated from steel or polythelyene.

Buoys are particularly suitable for use within harbours, rivers and lakes for marking limits and obstructions during underwater works and construction where the orbit is not critical.

SPAR Buoys

A spar buoy is a floating lit navigational aid which has an upper tower and subsea hull, floating vertically to provide a precision position for the mariner. It is anchored to a concrete block on the seabed by a small number of large chain links.

Spar buoys have a high positioning accuracy and provide the smallest orbit – thereby maximizing the width of dredged shipping channels.  Spar buoys have lower installation costs when compared with fixed structures as well as easier installation and can be re-positioned to suit future needs.

Long term performance of Spar Buoys is exceptional, therefore achieving very low maintenance costs.  Suitable for major Shipping channels including cyclonic areas.
