Data Correlation, Fusion and Tracking

When establishing a comprehensive site of surveillance sensors including multiple sensor sites and multiple sensor types at sensor sites, it is quite easy to saturate a VTS centre with so much data that an operator or number of operators will not be able to make sense of the data. A multi sensor and fusion tracking system will automatically manage the various data streams received from the various sensor types and will display a correlated picture to the operator.

Typically a multi sensor fusion tracker will accept both radar data and AIS data, will correlate coincidental radar and AIS tracks, and will display a fused single track to the operator with all of the received data. In addition the tracker will maintain a predictive tracking of all contacts and will spilt tracks again if the correlation algorithms dictate.

The predictive tracking algorithms will then provide information to the decision making tools that will alert the operator all manner of circumstances including closet point of approach warnings, zone alarms and speed warnings.

Multi sensor fusion trackers typically will also allow manual override and manual track initiation and cancellation.
